GILA RIVER INDIAN COMMUNITY is Hiring a Land Use Planner (Temporary) Near Sacaton, AZ

The Land Use Planner performs professional planning duties for current, short and long term planning activities for the Community. The incumbent is expected to exercise considerable independent judgment, initiative and professional skills and knowledge in the formulation, modification, and improvement of the Tribal zoning and subdivision codes, and the day-to-day implementation of the codes pertaining to the orderly regulation and control of the Community’s development and growth.

· Prepare reports for the Planning and Zoning Commission, Tribal Standing Committees, Tribal Council, and other agencies as required.

· Answer questions, verbally or in writing, regarding zoning changes and requirements of the zoning ordinance and other development regulations; prepare submittals for zoning changes and other requests as needed.

· Prepare studies and reports on current planning issues; provide assistance on short and long range planning activities as needed.

· Process zoning change requests, subdivisions, conditional use permits, zoning adjustments and annexation requests under the direction of the Director.

· Supervise and assist planning staff in more complex code enforcement, compliance and application.

· Serve as professional resource person to Tribal Council, Administration, Departments and Standing Committees as needed.

· Assist developers and the public with proposed developments and zoning development problems.

· Perform site plan reviews as assigned.

· Represent the Land Use Planning and Zoning Department on planning issues at various meetings as assigned; conduct speaking engagements to various civic organization and business groups regarding planning issues as assigned.

· Perform other related duties as assigned.

· Extensive knowledge in the practices and principles of Community planning, especially as it relates to current planning.

· Extensive knowledge in the area of research methods and statistical principles related to growth and development.

· Ability to evaluate statistical data and to present facts and conclusions clearly in written graphic and oral form.

· Ability to perform research and make independent investigations on planning problems.

· Capable of managing multiple high priority assignments.

· Ability to effectively plan, supervise and coordinate work of others.

· Ability to present and coordinate current planning issues of a high level with other departments, agencies, developers, consultants, citizen groups, and the public.

· Knowledge of computer hardware and software programs, database management and GIS.

· Ability to maintain flexible working hours.

· Ability to act as liaison to promote Tribal goals and policies to representatives of other governmental entities and to professional groups.

· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Community Officials and the public.

· Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position; agree to maintain a Drug-free workplace.

· Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Planning or Planning and Design (in urban, rural, regional, or transportation) or closely related field; and a minimum of three (3) years experience as a professional planner; Or

· Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in Planning or Planning and Design (in urban, rural, regional, or transportation) or closely related field; and five (5) years’ experience as a professional planner; Or

· High School diploma or GED and seven (7) years’ experience as a planner in planning or planning design in urban, rural, regional or transportation or closely related field.

· Required to obtain a Tribal Operator’s permit. Valid state driver’s license with proof of driving record for the past 39 months will be required to qualify for a tribal driving permit. Proof of driving record must be submitted with application and must not be more than 60 days old from the date of submission of the application
